Devils Postpile National Monument

Devils Postpile National Monument is mostly only open from July-October due to snow conditions, so it was indeed a treat to be able to explore there in August when we took Mak back to LMU. The 50 foot basalt columns are magical and we were truly in awe of their wonder.

As I do not do a ton of research before visiting a park, we discovered the best way to visit was via the Red Meadow Bus. So we parked, bought our tickets (and a special nod to the young woman at the ticket office that loved my shirt and wanted to know the brand … thank you NRS!), and explored the area. The bus ride is totally recommended as the road is very narrow and the parking is limited. On our way out, our super friendly driver stopped to search for a mountain lion that was reported to have been spotted on the previous bus moments ago. Alas, we did not see it but enjoyed her rendering of the noise the cat hissed at the bus. It is always fun to explore the parks!

And it was such a delight to see Mammoth Lakes in the summer. Back in our snowboarding days, Bo and I were fortunate to visit here many times during the winter … a Soloman Sales Meeting was a highlight! And I always love sharing my love of nature with my boys and wonderful to share this adventure with Mak.
