Flag Cake
Friends are the best! Meredith and I met at Wieden & Kennedy in the Mid-1990’s and became BFFs. We had our babies together and have shared many wonderful adventures together of the mind and body and of the heart and the soul. One of our favorite memories was making a flag cake together when the kids were very little. My heart swelled with love when I read her Facebook Post this Fourth of July …
“On this day 17 years ago, in Neskowin, Oregon @danabach and I started the tradition of making a flag cake for our kids- Mak and @zoe.chase. Every year since we’ve continued to bake. Sometimes together. Sometimes thousands of miles apart. We’ve brought three more beautiful vibrant kids into the world, - Tatum, Ryder and Sammy, have struggled through divorce, celebrated a remarriage, fought and won a brutal battle with cancer, visited multiple National Parks and gone through a kaleidoscope of career changes. While the world is seemingly going to hell in a handbasket - our annual tradition is a representation that despite it all- we persist.
This cake, in the face of all the ridiculousness facing our children is a symbol of family - in its many forms- love, friendship, resilience and endurance. I say…. Let them eat cake!! Happy 4th of July, y’all! (Except the Supreme Court).
And my favorite comment was from Mereith’s Dad Jay “Nice way to "take" back the flag.”
And one of the OG flag cakes with strawberries.
