Twice a year, a close-knit group of friends, including Lakeland High School buddies Thomas and Cliff, packs their boards and heads to paradise for their semi-annual surf trip in Costa Rica. Casa Ola Perfecta is the meeting spot and Florida friends Chuck and his son Kyle are our hosts. Casa Ola Perfecta is tucked along the Pacific coastline in Guanacaste, perfectly situated for a week of wave-catching and relaxation.
The first stop after landing in Liberia is Duty Free to load up on some post surf libations. Once you arrive at Casa Ola Perfecta every detail is covered, starting with full catering by La Ventana Natural Food Cafe, a local gem known for its fresh, vibrant dishes. From sunrise breakfasts to post-surf feasts, the meals are a highlight, fueling the group for long days in the surf.
The surf itself does not disappoint. We typically have clean waves in the 2-4 foot range most days, with the occasional overhead set rolling in to spice things up. Perfect conditions for what we affectionately call “fun old man waves.” They give us just the right balance of challenge and fun—enough to keep us frothing but not so much that we couldn’t paddle back out for more. And an old PNW friend, Bob, documents all of. our sessions. Bob and is wife Michelle retired to the area 15+ years ago. Always great to catch up with them.
Thomas, who refers to this trip as "the fountain of youth," brings his infectious enthusiasm to every lineup, reminding us all why these adventures are so special. Alongside Cliff, the two add their signature energy and humor, cheering each other on during epic rides and sharing stories from our Lakeland days over sunset beers.
After tackling Costa Rica’s fun waves, the group takes time to unwind with daily visits from local masseuse Katie, who helps melt away any lingering tension from the day's rides. Between the incredible accommodations, the perfect waves, and the balance of adventure and relaxation, this trip is a reminder of why we always return.
For this crew, it’s more than just a surf trip—it’s a tradition, a time to reconnect, and a way to recharge in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. With Thomas, Cliff, Chuck, Kyle, and the rest of the gang, the pura vida spirit is alive and well. Here’s to the next gathering of old friends, salty waves, and unforgettable memories!

It’s the same everyday, early morning session followed by coffee and constant surf checks then we surf again.
