African Burial Ground National Memorial

The African Burial Ground National Memorial is such a special place, we visited it twice while in NYC.

Our first visit was on a Sunday when the park was closed. (Note, we had originally planned to visit it on Saturday, however, we were invited on a tour of Harlem with our local expert friend Loretta … and we couldn’t pass that up!) As we were learning about the park, we met Mel who shared that she comes down here to connect with her elders. She eloquently stated “Guidance is upon us if we know where to look. Our ancestors are here for us. The spirit knows when to put people in your path.” She conveyed this park is impactful and encouraged us to visit again when it was open so we could feel its power.

We had to come back!

Our second visit was on our final morning in NYC. We walked through the labyrinth and discovered the echo chamber, which we later leaned is called the Libations Chamber, to give voice to those without one.
