Mexico 2024

Hello Mexico City! Since I married a surfer, my adventures to Mexico have always been to the beach. This was my first adventure to the interior and I loved every moment. My dear friend Robin invited me to join her for her milestone birthday trip with Wild Terrains and of course I happily accepted. First, I love traveling with world with the ones I love. Secondly, I absolutely adore Wild Terrains that specialized in travel for women, by women.

Day 1: Our travel day down to CDMX! The city is massive and it is the home to over 22 Million people, making it the 7th largest city in the world. We were delayed out of PDX, so we had to run to catch our MEX flight at DFW,. We got in late and on the recommendation of Raoul at the Octavia Casa, we had tacos at El Califa in Condessa.

Day #2: We set out to explore the city on foot. Our first stop was to Lardo for a delicious breakfast. Then we headed to the park to visit the museums. We landed at the Museo National de Antroplolgia and loved exploring the exhibits. In the afternoon, it was time to start our Wild Terrains Mexico City Tour … ‘Dinner came to us in the form of a cooking class hosted by one of Mexico City’s top women chefs, Mercedes Bernal. We gathered in the kitchen to learn how to make some modern Mexican dishes as a group, then we sait down for a fun dinner together.’ We enjoyed vegetarian pastor tacos with pablano romesco sauce and pineapple habanero salsa … plus the best dessert I’ve ever tasted!

Day #3: After a delicious breakfast, we were off to a jewelry workshop at Sangre de mi Sangre in a beautiful old building. Then we went to Tamales Madre for wonderful lunch.

“Tamales Madre emerged in February 2019 in the heart of CDMX. With less than 25m2 in Colonia Juárez, the Tamales Madre team works every day making nixtamal, grinding and masa to make a unique variety of tamales. Using only Creole corn and fresh, local ingredients, our tamales harken back to Mexican flavors and traditions.”

Next we toured around the neighborhood and enjoyed the shops. For dinner, we met up with Robin’s dear friend Filipe and his wife. We started with drinks at the all female bartender cocktail lounge Bar Las Brujas and then over to Blanco Colima for dinner.

Day #4: Today is our food tour with Anais Martinez, the Curious Mexican in the Mercado de Jamaica. We sampled food at every stop from having a contraband Pop Tart to eating green chorizo. After a fruit tasting and a jaunt through the flower market, we received an education on the importance of the Mexican chili. Then we were off to Colorindio to learn all about their life-changing textile movement. We ended the day with a delicious meal at Barra de al Lado and a walk through Condessa.

Day #5: Today is our Frida day! We had breakfast with art historian Natalia Zerbato and received an education on Frida Kahlo. Then we were off to the Coyoacan Neighborhood to tour the Casa Azul and soak it all up. Then we enjoyed the local art fair and Coyoacan’s main square. The afternoon took Robin and I too a delicious and highly recommended restaurant Botanico. And our group dinner was to Meroma Restaurant by Chef Mercedes Bernal.

Day #6: Today, we said goodbye to all of our new best friends and we headed over to the Polanco neighborhood. We loved walking endlessly, discovering a new area, and soaking up all of the color of CDMX.

Day #7: A day of adventure to see the famous Teotihuacán ruins. It has been a dream of mine to see the world’s famous ruins and today was magical.

From Lonely Planet … “This fabulous archaeological zone lies in a mountain-ringed offshoot of the Valle de México. Site of the huge Pirámides del Sol y de la Luna (Pyramids of the Sun and Moon), Teotihuacán was Mexico's biggest ancient city and the capital of what was probably the country's largest pre-Hispanic empire.”

Then we toured around Central CDMX and saw some of the city’s most beautiful buildings … Palacio de Bellas Artes, Palacio Nacional, and the Plaza de la Constitución (El Zócalo).

We grabbed lunch at a local favorite El Cardenal. I highly recommend the Chile rellenos!

Day #8: On our last morning in CDMX, we soaked up some sunshine while walking around the neighborhood. There is so much so see and do here, we are already excited to come back soon. and explore more!
